Patent/Transfer Silver Leaf

Patent Silver Leaf, also known as transfer leaf, is mounted onto a thin tissue backing, allowing for greater control and ease of handling during application. Unlike loose leaf, which must be manipulated with a gilder’s tip, patent leaf can be picked up and placed directly by hand, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and professionals working on smooth, flat surfaces.
Each leaf is lightly pressed onto the tissue through a mechanical process, ensuring it remains adhered until applied. During gilding, the leaf is laid onto the prepared surface and gently rubbed, releasing the silver from the tissue backing for a clean and controlled transfer.
Patent silver leaf is particularly well suited for:
• Flat and smooth surfaces
• Large surface areas requiring consistency
• Vertical or overhead applications
• Projects where ease of use and efficiency are important
Produced from pure silver, patent leaf retains the same bright, reflective finish and cool-toned appearance as loose silver leaf. It can be applied using oil gilding techniques and is widely used in decorative, architectural, and fine art applications.
As with all genuine silver, patent leaf will naturally tarnish over time when exposed to air. To preserve its brightness, a protective, non-yellowing topcoat is recommended, especially for interior work or high-touch surfaces.
Patent silver leaf offers a practical and accessible alternative to loose leaf, combining the beauty of genuine silver with added control, efficiency, and ease of application.
