LeFranc Clay

LeFranc Burnishing Clay is a premium French bole base developed for traditional water gilding applications. Known for its exceptional fineness and smooth consistency, it provides an ideal surface for laying genuine gold leaf. When properly prepared and burnished, it allows the gilded surface to be compressed to a brilliant, mirror-like finish, making it a trusted choice for professional gilders and restoration specialists.
Available in three traditional bole colors, LeFranc Clay is supplied as a ready-made paste pre-mixed with water, reducing preparation time while maintaining the integrity of traditional methods. Its refined texture supports excellent adhesion, clean burnishing, and superior surface clarity, making it suitable for frames, panels, icons, architectural ornamentation, and other detailed work.
LeFranc Burnishing Clay contains no binder and must be combined with a protein-based adhesive such as rabbit skin glue, hide glue, or gelatin before use. This allows the gilder to control the strength and working properties of the bole to suit specific techniques and environmental conditions. Designed for authentic water gilding, it delivers reliable, high-quality results where traditional craftsmanship is essential.
