Composition Gold Leaf—also referred to as Dutch Metal, Imitation Gold or Schlagmetal—is valued by artists and gilders for its warm, gold-like appearance and affordability, making it a popular choice for decorative and large-scale applications where the look of gold is desired without the cost of precious metal. Made from brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, it offers a bright, reflective finish that closely resembles genuine gold leaf.

As an imitation metal leaf, Composition Gold Leaf is more reactive than pure gold and will tarnish over time when exposed to air and environmental conditions. Its color may deepen or dull if left unsealed, so a protective topcoat is required to preserve its original brilliance and prevent oxidation.

Sepp Leaf Products offers Composition Gold Leaf in four distinct color variations, allowing artists and designers to select from a range of gold tones to suit different aesthetic preferences and project needs. Each variation provides subtle differences in warmth and brightness, from pale gold hues to deeper, richer tones.

Composition Gold Leaf is typically available in standard book packaging, with individual leaves separated by tissue paper for precise handling and application using traditional gilding tools and techniques. It may also be available in patent (transfer) form and roll formats, offering flexibility for both detailed work and efficient coverage of large, flat surfaces.

Because of its composition and susceptibility to tarnishing, Composition Gold Leaf is best suited for interior applications. Without a protective coating, it will oxidize and lose its metallic luster over time.

Composition Gold Leaf is ideal for: • Decorative and interior finishes • Frames and architectural detailing • Furniture and cabinetry • Murals and large-scale installations • Signage and lettering • Mixed-media and contemporary designs

Composition Gold Leaf should be handled with clean, dry tools to avoid surface contamination, which can affect the final appearance once sealed. Proper storage in a stable, dry environment will help maintain the integrity of the leaf prior to use.

When properly applied and sealed, Composition Gold Leaf provides a cost-effective, visually striking alternative to genuine gold, delivering a classic metallic finish with versatility across a wide range of interior applications.
