Genuine Loose (Surface) Gold Leaf
Loose Gold Leaf—also known as Surface Gold Leaf—is carefully assembled by placing each delicate sheet of gold between interleaving pages of thin, lightly rouged paper. This traditional packaging method protects the fragile metal while allowing the gilder to lift and handle a single leaf at a time without disturbing the remaining sheets in the book.
To remove a leaf, the gilder uses a gilder’s tip, a flat, soft, natural-hair brush that gently picks up the gold through static charge, ensuring precise placement and minimal waste. This controlled handling makes loose leaf the preferred format for professional gilders, conservators, and artisans working on fine or intricate surfaces.
Each booklet contains 25 individual leaves and is sold in packs of 20 books, totaling 500 leaves per package. Leaves are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses, allowing artists to select the format best suited to their project, from delicate ornamental details to larger architectural surfaces.
Loose Gold Leaf is highly versatile and compatible with both water gilding and oil gilding techniques. Its ultra-thin nature allows it to conform easily to carved, molded, or irregular surfaces, producing a seamless, luminous finish. Because of its exceptional sensitivity and traditional presentation, loose leaf is especially well suited for:
· Fine art and decorative gilding
· Frame and furniture refurbishment
· Architectural ornamentation
· Iconography and restoration work
· Detailed and high-relief surfaces
When properly applied and burnished, Loose Gold Leaf delivers unmatched brilliance, depth, and elegance, making it the gold standard for projects that demand precision, authenticity, and the highest level of craftsmanship.
