Sepp Leaf Products offers beautiful, translucent natural Abalone shell
specially prepared in sheets measuring 5-1/2" x 9-1/2". This
is the highest grade abalone available to sign artists and decorative
finishers, often used for striking letter centers, accents, and ornamental
details. Sepp Leaf carries eleven different varieties, each offering
unique color patterns and iridescent effects that make abalone a distinctive
decorative material.
Abalone shell veneers are created from thinly sliced pieces of shell that
are bonded together and sanded flat to form continuous sheets. These veneers
are commonly used for surface overlays and inlays and can be applied to a wide
range of decorative projects including architectural surfaces, lighting
fixtures, signage, furniture, musical instruments, jewelry, and other
ornamental work.
The sheets are thin and flexible, allowing them to bend to a considerable
degree, especially when coated with a flexible resin or aliphatic polyurethane.
Because the material is very thin, it has a high level of transparency,
allowing light to pass through when applied to glass or backlit surfaces. For
surface mounting, it is often recommended to paint the back side of the
veneer to control the final appearance.
Shell veneers can be easily cut using a sharp knife or scissors. Soaking
the material in water overnight prior to cutting may help improve flexibility.
When cutting with scissors, it is advisable to apply adhesive tape to the top
surface to hold the material together until it is fixed to the substrate.
Alternatively, the surface can be coated with resin or spray prior to cutting.
Abalone veneers may also be cut using specialized equipment such as laser
cutters or water jet machines.
Warning: Avoid breathing dust generated from cutting, trimming, or sanding the
material. Use appropriate dust protection and wash hands and tools thoroughly
after handling.
