Oxidized Silver Leaf

Japanese Oxidized Silver Leaf is valued by artists and gilders for its richly variegated surface and patina, offering a unique alternative to traditional metallic finishes. It is made from chemically treated pure silver leaf, resulting in nuanced oxide colors that bring depth, movement, and organic variation to a wide range of decorative and fine art applications.
Unlike colored silver leaf that relies on resin-based dyes, Japanese Oxidized Silver Leaf undergoes a controlled oxidation process that creates color directly on the surface of the metal. This results in complex, naturally developed tones that may continue to evolve subtly over time, enhancing the character of the finished work.
Sepp Leaf Products offers Japanese Oxidized Silver Leaf in loose (surface) form, with each individual leaf separated by interleaving tissue paper cut to the same size. Each leaf measures approximately 5 inches × 5 inches (129 mm × 129 mm) and is extremely thin and delicate, requiring careful handling during application. Booklets of 100 leaves are not individually bound, and packs are comprised of five 100-leaf books. Each 100-leaf book covers approximately 1.6 m² (about 17.2 square feet).
Because of its delicate composition, oxidized silver leaf is applied using traditional gilding techniques and is best suited for interior applications. It must be sealed to preserve its coloration, as the oxidized surface can continue to change over time if left unprotected. However, all sealants will alter the appearance of the leaf to some degree, often softening or slightly dulling the vibrancy of the oxide colors. For this reason, testing is strongly recommended prior to full application to determine the desired final effect.
Alcohol-based sealers are not recommended, as they can adversely affect the oxidized surface. While sealing helps stabilize the finish and slow further oxidation, it may reduce some of the natural brilliance and tonal variation that make this leaf distinctive.
Japanese Oxidized Silver Leaf is ideal for: • Interior decorative finishes • Fine art and mixed media applications • Frames and ornamental surfaces • Projects emphasizing natural patina and tonal variation • Contemporary and expressive surface design
Like all metal leaf, Japanese Oxidized Silver Leaf is sensitive to handling and environmental conditions. Proper storage in a dry, stable environment helps preserve its quality and ensures consistent results during application.
When properly applied and sealed, Japanese Oxidized Silver Leaf offers a uniquely expressive finish, combining the elegance of silver with the depth and unpredictability of natural oxidation.
