Silver leaf is available in loose (surface) leaf, patent (transfer) leaf, oxidized silver leaf, colored silver leaf, and roll form, allowing artists and gilders to select the format best suited to their technique and surface. Loose leaf is ideal for detailed and contoured work, while patent leaf provides greater control on smooth, flat surfaces. Each book contains 25 leaves.
Because of its delicate composition, silver leaf can be applied using traditional water gilding or oil gilding techniques, depending on the project requirements. While it can be used for interior gilding when properly applied and sealed, genuine silver will naturally oxidize and tarnish when exposed to air and environmental conditions. Without a protective topcoat, silver leaf will tarnish over time, making it unsuitable for exterior use. To preserve its brightness, a compatible protective sealer should be applied after gilding when a stable finish is desired.
Some artists intentionally allow silver leaf to tarnish before applying a topcoat, embracing the natural patina and tonal variation that develops as part of the finish. This controlled oxidation can add depth, character, and an aged aesthetic to the final work.

Like all metal leaf, silver leaf is sensitive to handling and environmental conditions. Proper storage in a dry, stable environment helps preserve its quality and ensures consistent results during application.
