A book of Patent Gold Leaf—also known as Transfer Gold Leaf—is produced by adhering each delicate sheet of gold to a backing of special tissue paper through a controlled pressure process. This format allows the gilder to handle each leaf individually with ease, without disturbing the remaining sheets in the book, offering greater control and efficiency during application.

Unlike loose leaf, Patent Gold Leaf does not require a gilder’s tip for handling. Instead, the leaf remains securely attached to its tissue backing until it is pressed onto a properly prepared surface, at which point the tissue is peeled away. This method makes patent leaf especially practical for use in environments where airflow, movement, or challenging conditions would make loose leaf difficult to manage.

Each booklet contains 25 leaves and is sold in packs of 20 books, totaling 500 leaves per package. Patent leaf is available in a range of sizes and thicknesses, allowing flexibility across a variety of project scales and applications.

Patent Gold Leaf is best suited for oil gilding techniques and performs particularly well on smooth, flat surfaces. It is the preferred choice for:

Exterior and outdoor gilding

Large-scale or production work

Signage and architectural applications

Situations requiring greater handling control

Due to its tissue backing, Patent Gold Leaf is not suitable for traditional water gilding and does not conform as easily to highly detailed or irregular surfaces as loose leaf. Additionally, because of the wax residue from the transfer process, water-based topcoats are not recommended, as they may not properly adhere to the surface.

Because the leaf is mounted to paper, it is sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Proper storage is essential to maintain performance. Patent leaf should be kept in a moderately humid environment (around 80% humidity), ideally wrapped to preserve moisture balance. If stored in overly dry conditions, the leaf may detach from the tissue; this can be corrected by reintroducing humidity and applying light pressure. Conversely, if exposed to excessive heat and humidity, the leaf may adhere too tightly, this can be remedied by storing it in a cool, dry place.

When handled and stored correctly, Patent Gold Leaf offers a reliable, efficient, and accessible gilding solution, combining traditional craftsmanship with practical functionality for both indoor and outdoor applications.
