Shellac Flakes

Shellac flakes are a traditional finishing material used by professional woodworkers, cabinet makers, furniture manufacturers, and gilders. These high-quality shellac flakes are wax and resin free, making them an ideal sealant and high-gloss varnish for both genuine and imitation metal leaf. Once a surface has been gilded, shellac can be applied to protect the leaf and to create subtle color toning effects. It can be applied by brush or airbrush, depending on the desired finish.
To prepare shellac for use, the flakes are dissolved in ethanol or denatured alcohol, creating a liquid shellac suitable for sealing, polishing, or glazing surfaces. Shellac is widely used in French polishing, furniture restoration, and decorative finishing, and can be selected in different natural tones to influence the final appearance of the surface.
Sepp Leaf Products offers several varieties of shellac flakes including Blonde De-Waxed Shellac, which produces a light transparent finish ideal for antique restoration and light woods; Button Shellac, which creates a warm golden-brown polish suitable for restoration work and darker timbers; Garnet Shellac, which produces a deep brown French polish often used on darker woods; and Lemon Shellac, which creates a pale gold tone suited for light to medium colored woods.
