Insta-Clay is a single-process base for water gilding developed by
Kölner GlanzGold Grund to simplify and accelerate traditional gilding
preparation. This system eliminates the need for the multiple steps normally
required in water gilding, including separate applications of glue, gesso,
and bole. Insta-Clay is designed primarily for the preparation of moldings,
frames, and decorative objects, making it particularly useful for
commercial producers of gilded items.
Insta-Clay is a water-soluble acrylic resin with pigments that can
be sprayed onto the surface, creating a smooth and consistent foundation for
gilding. Its high solids content provides excellent coverage when
applied with a low-pressure spray system, helping reduce preparation
time while maintaining professional results. Once the surface is prepared with
Insta-Clay, gold or silver leaf can be applied using standard water gilding
techniques.
For gilding over Insta-Clay surfaces, Colnasize Concentrate is
used to prepare the appropriate gilder’s liquor. The solution is easily
prepared by dissolving one measured teaspoon of Colnasize in two cups of
lukewarm tap water, creating the adhesive solution used during the gilding
process.
Insta-Clay is available in Black, Ochre, and Red and is supplied
in quart and gallon sizes.
