Rottenstone

Rottenstone is a very fine powdered limestone traditionally used as a polishing and antiquing abrasive in gilding and decorative finishing. Its extremely fine texture makes it ideal for polishing metals and gently distressing water gilded surfaces, allowing the gilder to reveal underlying bole layers and natural lay-lines for an authentic aged appearance. The soft grey color of the powder also makes it a useful antiquing dust for creating subtle patina effects.

Rottenstone can be used wet or dry and is often applied after an initial treatment with coarser pumice powder to achieve a smoother, more refined polish. In addition to gilding applications, it can also be used to sand varnished surfaces, polish metals, and buff stains from wood, making it a versatile finishing material for restorers and decorative artists.

Available in 500 gram and 1 kilogram containers.
