Asphaltum

Asphaltum is a traditional darkening liquid used to create shading and aging effects on gold leaf and other decorative finishes. It is commonly applied as a glaze to produce warm tones and subtle antiquing effects, making it a popular material for picture frame gilding, restoration work, and decorative finishes.
Asphaltum varnish is also widely used in reverse glass sign work, sandblasted frosted glass, and glue chipping as a resist or shading medium. When applied in thin layers, Asphaltum can create a wide range of tones: light coats produce soft golden hues, medium coats create rich copper tones, heavier applications produce bronze and burnt umber undertones, and very thick layers appear dark brown to nearly black and opaque. Historically, Asphaltum varnish was often used as a backing paint on antique mirrors after the glass was silvered, adding depth and surface protection.
